Portmuck is a small coastal village on the northeastern coast of Islandmagee, a peninsula in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Portmuck Harbour is a picturesque and historically significant harbour located in this village. The harbour overlooks the North Channel and the Irish Sea.
Historically, Portmuck Harbour has been used for fishing activities. Today, while not a bustling commercial port, it retains its charm as a small working harbour where local fishermen still operate.
The coastal area around Portmuck is known for its diverse wildlife. You may have the opportunity to observe seabirds, including gulls and terns, as well as other coastal fauna.
The village of Portmuck and the harbor are often starting points for coastal walks along the Islandmagee peninsula. The walks offer stunning views of the coastline and may include paths leading to nearby attractions.
There are two walking trails on either side of the harbour. The Northern trail to the left of harbour: From the car park cross the picnic area and through the wooden swing gate. Turn left and follow the path up the slope. Cross a step-over stile and continue across two open fields until you reach the boundary. Return by same route.
Southern trail to the right of harbour. Climb the steps beside the harbour, follow the path and go down the steps to the rocky shore. Turn right until you reach the tombolo over to the Isle of Muck. Follow the trail up the slope to the right. When the main grassy path is reached ,Turn right and take the trail on the left until the road is reached, turn right and walk along the road until you return to the car park.
šø Portmuck Harbour is one of my favourite sunrise spots in Northern Ireland!
