Polzeath Beach is where we had out first ever surf lesson and it was perfect for it. A wide, flat beach with good consistent waves it makes for a great classroom for people of all ages and abilities.

We had our lessons with George's Surf School who the Guardian called "One of top 10 surf schools in the world". And although we don't have the experience to certify the claim (!) what we can say is that it was an extremely well run operation and we found it a lot of fun. We had a private lesson just the two of us and it was the right mix of fun, technical and relaxed, and under the guidance of our instructor we even found ourselves standing up by the end.

There are however several options for companies offering lessons and board rental so you're not short for choice.

And even if you don't fancy doing battle with the waves, Polzeath is a pretty glorious spot to just hang out and watch the world go by.

Grab a Paradise Pizza once you're done in the water... you'll be hungry and they are banging!
