Dorset Fossil Forest is a fascinating and often missed stop just a short walk from Lulworth Cove, and it’s well worth adding to your route while you’re in the area. This unusual landscape is made up of the petrified remains of a 140-million-year-old cypress forest, where tree stumps have been turned to stone and left exposed in the limestone.

It’s around a 15-minute walk from Lulworth Cove along an easy path, making it simple to combine with a visit to the cove, Lulworth Cove Viewpoint and nearby Stair Hole. Parking is best at Lulworth Cove Car Park in West Lulworth, from where you can explore everything on foot without moving the car.

While it’s not a large area, the Fossil Forest feels quietly special, especially if you enjoy geology or unusual landscapes, and it adds an interesting contrast to the dramatic coastline and sea views nearby. The path can become quite muddy and slippery at times, especially after heavy rains.
