Travel Inspirations by 500 Miles Away

Our final destination of the day was Skaftafell National Park, part of the larger Vatnajökull Glacier region. The park offers numerous hiking trails, but we set our sights on Svartifoss, the “Black Waterfall,” famous for the hexagonal basalt columns that frame it like a natural cathedral.

Set within Skaftafell National Park, the hike to Svartifoss was about 1.5 km and offered stunning views along the way. The trail was well-maintained, though it was uphill at parts, making the sight of the waterfall even more rewarding. The striking feature of Svartifoss is its dark, hexagonal basalt columns, which frame the waterfall like a natural cathedral. Standing at the base of the falls, we felt in awe of the sheer power and beauty of the water crashing down between the black rocks. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with incredible Icelandic landscapes.
