Travel Inspirations by 500 Miles Away

A short drive east from Skaftafell brings you to Fjallsárlón, a smaller, quieter cousin of the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Unlike its larger neighbor, Fjallsárlón feels intimate and peaceful, with turquoise icebergs floating gently on the lagoon, reflecting the towering Vatnajökull Glacier behind them.

In summer, the lagoon is particularly photogenic: the icebergs are bright blue and white, the water calm, and the sunlight casts soft shadows across the glacial surface. We walked along the shoreline, mesmerized by the sound of cracking ice and the occasional splash as chunks of ice broke off the glacier. For a more adventurous experience, guided kayaking trips are available — paddling among the icebergs gives a unique, up-close perspective of the glacier’s edge.

Even from the viewing platform, Fjallsárlón offers a tranquil moment to reflect on the scale and beauty of Vatnajökull. The combination of ice, water, and sunlight creates a magical atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly, a perfect capstone to a day exploring the South Coast’s natural wonders.
