Stobi was an ancient Macedonian city located close to present-day Gradsko, North Macedonia. It dates back to the Archaic period and was strategically important due to its position in the fertile central Vardar valley and proximity to the junction of the Erigón and Axiós Rivers. Its wealth was greatly attributed to nearby Mount Klepa, a lucrative source of marble. Stobi was successively conquered by Philip V, annexed by Rome to become the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia Salutaris, and then later robbed by Theodoric in 479 AD. Stobi was rich in religious artifacts from Hygeia, Telesphorus, Artemis Locheia, Apollo Clarious, Jupiter, Dionysus and Hera, as well as having several big churches with beautiful interior decoration of mosaics and frescoes. The city was even home to a synagogue, testifying to the presence of Jews in the area. Today, many of the historical artifacts like statues and mosaics still remain, providing a fascinating insight into what life was like in Stobi.
