This lake is the perfect spot to hang out in summer! The water is crystal clear and is surrounded by pure white sand, which makes it a unique lake. It's also a nice place to visit any time of year, especially on a sunny day so the water shows off its blue hue.
Lake Taharoa is one of three stunning lakes in Northland, known as the Kai Iwi Lakes. The other two lakes are Lake Kai Iwi and Lake Waikere, which aren't as popular as Lake Taharoa. Taharoa is the largest of the 3 and has the most space around the lake and it's where most people hang out. The lake is perfect for swimming, boating and water sports. You can also catch rainbow trout here.
An important warning for swimming: The lake drops off suddenly from shallow to deep, so be aware when swimming, especially with kids. You can see where the water goes from an ice blue to a deep blue.
Getting There: You'll find the lake in the Taharoa Domain and it is well sign posted.
Parking: There is plenty of parking in the domain, as well as public toilets and a playground.
