Built in 1874, this shipwreck was an important part of coastal trade. On a stormy night in August 1903, the Jane Seddon got stuck on the Motueka Sandspit and despite efforts to save it, the ship was abandoned and left to fall apart. Over the years, the wreck has become a local landmark in Motueka. If you look closely, you may be able to spot kingfisher birds flying to and from the shipwreck. The shipwreck isn't far from the shore, so getting photos is really easy and doesn't require a long trek.

Things to know:

  • You can see the shipwreck at low and high tide but it's only accessible at low tide.

  • It's not recommended that you go inside the shipwreck due to it being unstable.

  • The ground around the shipwreck can be tricky to walk on because it's primarily sandy and can be quite soft. As you walk, you might find yourself sinking into the sand, making it difficult to move easily!

  • There is a row of stepping stones that appear at low tide, so use these to walk on if you want to get close to the shipwreck. Some of these rocks are a little unstable so take care.

Getting there: The shipwreck is near the carpark, so there isn't much of a walk to get to it.

Parking: There is parking along Motueka Quay.
