Baylys Beach is a rugged west coast beach in Northland. The beach is part of Ripiro Beach, which is an impressive 107kms long. The sand on the beach is a mixture of gold and black sand, with the black sand making impressive patterns in the sand. We like to visit this beach for photography, rather than swimming, as the currents can be strong here. The dramatic clay cliffs are the perfect backdrop for taking photos and it's so nice walking along them, looking for little oasis' in amongst them. The beach has loads of driftwood which makes for a comfy seat or something to create art out of. Due to the length of the beach, there is plenty of space to walk as little or as far as you like (you have 107kms of beach to enjoy!).

Why not grab some fish and chips from Sharkys Takeaways up the road and enjoy dinner at the beach - a true Kiwi favourite.

Things to know:

  • Ripiro Beach is New Zealand's longest driveable beach, so keep an eye out for traffic!

  • There can be rips and strong currents at the beach so take care when swimming
