This waterfall is one of the most beautiful falls I have seen in all of New Zealand. It's a 22m cascade waterfall on the Tautuku River, cascading over multiple terraces which is what makes it look so beautiful! It's my top waterfall recommendation in the Catlins (and one of my top waterfall recommendations in New Zealand!).
The track to McLean Falls is 2.1kms return and takes 40 minutes there and back and is a mixture of flat gravel, stairs and hills. It winds through native bush where trees twist and turn and roots are covered in moss. It's incredibly beautiful and even though it's a 40 minute return track, you may take longer after spending time at the beautiful waterfall and along the track if you love nature like I do :)
There is no viewing platform at the base of the waterfall, however there is a flat rocky area which is perfect for soaking in the views - literally if the wind is heading your way - and this the perfect place to set up a tripod for your camera.
Tips for visiting:
Make sure not to stop between the signs that warning about falling rocks (there are warnings for a reason!).
The waterfall is always best after heavy rainfall - this is when it looks most impressive! If you are wanting to capture some great photos of the falls, try to go early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer so you can create some stunning photos!
If you have young children with you, please keep them close as there are no barriers at the waterfall.
McLean Falls are 1 hour south of Kaka Point, down Rewcastle Road, off the Southern Scenic Route. Rewcastle Road is a 3km gravel road and you feel like you're heading into the middle of nowhere, but you're in the right spot! The carpark has lots of space and you'll find public toilets here.
