This destination is well-suited for both beginner and experienced hikers, with two trail options: a short, accessible boardwalk loop and a longer nature trail that offers a more immersive experience.

The Ground Pathways, which require a fee and a video lecture. This route takes you through the primeval forest surrounding five pristine lakes, reflecting the Shiretoko Mountain Range. During my walk, I was lucky enough to see bears and deer.

Hiking Season and Trail Details

  • Best Time to Hike: May to October. Spring and autumn are particularly scenic, with wildflowers and vibrant foliage.

  • Distance:

    • Short Trail (Plank Route): 1.6 km round trip

    • Long Trail (Nature Route): 3 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: Minimal on both trails

  • Duration:

    • Short Trail: About 30-45 minutes

    • Long Trail: About 90 minutes to 2 hours

  • Bear Safety: Shiretoko is a high-bear area. Bear encounters are rare on the boardwalk but possible on the long trail. To hike the Long Trail during the bear season (usually May to July), a brief bear safety orientation is required.
