Erinji Temple in Yamanashi is easily one of the most impeccably maintained temples I’ve ever visited. During my stay, I was struck by the dedication of the staff—at least five housekeepers and several monks work tirelessly to keep the temple in perfect condition. It’s a tranquil escape from daily life, and the temple grounds offer a serene atmosphere ideal for reflection and peace.

The 700-year-old garden, designed by the renowned landscape artist Muso Kokushi, is a highlight, especially when the vibrant autumn foliage peaks in mid-November. The temple itself is also deeply connected to history, honoring Takeda Shingen, the famed warlord who ruled over this region from 1540 to 1573.

For a deeper experience, visitors can arrange private Zen training sessions, immersing themselves further in the temple’s peaceful surroundings. And if you’re considering an overnight stay, Shukubo Bogetsuan, the temple’s guest lodging, offers an ideal option.
