Cenote Cocodrilo Dorado: The Jungle’s Hidden Sanctuary

Located in La Unión, the very last town in Quintana Roo on the border with Belize, this is the ultimate frontier experience. This isn't your typical tourist cenote; it's a dramatic limestone cliff overlooking a deep blue water mirror. It is the heart of my Ruta Sur, perfect for those seeking raw nature and star-filled nights.

The Experience:

  • The Sunset Spectacle: At dusk, look up to the sky. You will witness millions of bats emerging from the caves, creating a mesmerizing "smoke" effect—one of nature’s most incredible hidden shows.

  • Wildlife & Hiking: Explore the surrounding hiking trails where, if you're quiet enough, you can spot spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and a variety of tropical birds in their natural habitat.

  • Camping & Bonfires: For about $100 MXN per person, you can pitch your tent by the cenote. It is one of the few places where you can safely build a bonfire and sleep under a blanket of stars.

  • Day Trip or Cabins: Visit for a day swim or stay in their rustic cabins, which feature comfortable beds and air conditioning for a peaceful night's rest.

Founder’s Tips:

Go Mid-week: To experience the absolute silence of the jungle and have the cenote all to yourself, I highly recommend going between Monday and Thursday.

The Location: Getting to La Unión is part of the adventure. You are at the very edge of Mexico, where the jungle is thickest and the wildlife is most active.

Vibe: Wild, mystical, and adventurous. Cost: Approx. $100 MXN for camping. What to bring: Binoculars for bird and monkey watching, bug spray, and a flashlight.
