Laguna Bonanza: The Secret Entrance to the Rapids

Located on the southern tip of the Bacalar lagoon system, Laguna Bonanza is a local favorite and a true hidden gem for those who prefer a more authentic and affordable experience. It’s a rustic, family-run spot that offers some of the clearest and most crystalline waters in the entire region.

The Experience:

  • The Kayak Shortcut: This is the ultimate "insider" move. You can rent a kayak here and paddle directly to the famous Bacalar Rapids (Los Rápidos). It’s a short, beautiful trip that allows you to see the stunning stromatolites and turquoise currents without the crowds and high entry fees of the main beach clubs.

  • Swimming Paradise: The water here is incredibly calm, shallow, and has a bright white sandy bottom, making it feel like a massive natural swimming pool.

  • Day Trip Ready: It’s an ideal spot to spend the entire day. You can rent a shaded table and even pay a small fee to bring your own cooler (hielera) with drinks and snacks.

Costs & Logistics:

  • Entry Fee: Between $50 and $100 MXN (depending on whether you are a local or a visitor).

  • Additional Services: Extra fees apply for tables, cooler entry, and kayak rentals.

Founder’s Tip: If you want to see the Rapids without the "tourist trap" vibe, start your day here at Bonanza. I recommend arriving early on a weekday to enjoy the glassy water all to yourself. It’s the most peaceful way to experience the southern lagoon.

Vibe: Local, rustic, and crystal-clear. Perfect for: Budget travelers, kayakers, and families. What to bring: Snorkel gear, water shoes, and plenty of reef-safe snacks!
