Who doesn't enjoy a stroll through the zoo?
The world's oldest zoos are located right here in Germany — institutions that have grown and evolved over the years. Today, they are considered among the most modern in the world, and the Cologne Zoo is one of them.
The Cologne Zoological Garden opened its doors on July 22, 1860, making it the third-oldest zoo in Germany.
It was magnificently designed, blending centuries-old structures with modern buildings, and features lush, vibrant landscaping.
Families can spend a wonderful day at the zoo, which offers excellent amenities such as restaurants, snack bars, restrooms, shops, and rest areas for children. All of this is set amidst a wealth of attractions and incredible animals.
During World War II, the zoo was completely destroyed, and almost all of its animals perished; only 22 animals survived. A total of 133 bomb craters were found throughout the zoo grounds.
The zoo reopened in 1947, and in the years that followed, its grounds expanded and many new inhabitants arrived. Today, it is home to approximately 10,000 animals representing over a thousand different species.
The venue's reputation extends far beyond its borders, as the Cologne Zoo pioneered captive breeding programs for the preservation of endangered species back in 1975.
Across zoos throughout Europe, there is a growing awareness regarding the threats facing wild animals in their natural habitats.
This magnificent and expansive zoo boasts a multitude of attractions, the highlights of which include:
THE ELEPHANT PARK
This extraordinary structure covers an area of 20,000 square meters and is fully enclosed. Here, Asian elephants and their calves live together in harmony.
The entire space is designed to evoke the atmosphere of a forest, completely surrounded by trees.
A small museum tells the story of the evolution of this enormous pachyderm and displays various photographs—many of which depict hunters indiscriminately slaughtering elephants in pursuit of their ivory.
It also highlights the extensive efforts currently underway to protect these elephants from such predators.
HIPPODOM
The Hippo Park occupies an area of 4,000 square meters. It is home to 100 animals representing more than 14 different species.
The lives of the hippos and crocodiles can be observed through enormous pools featuring transparent walls that are 5 cm thick and 3 meters high. The pools measure 40 by 48 meters.
It marks a milestone in the evolution of zoological parks. You come "face to face" with the animals. It is both incredible and beautiful.
FELINE HABITAT
This is a wonderful open-air area that houses various species of felines. Come see the "King" of the jungle resting in the pleasant shade.
The setting is stunning; it feels as though the visitor has been transported to the open savannas of Africa!
If you are feeling adventurous, you can step inside the leopard enclosure. These enclosures are fully glass-fronted and completely safe!
PENGUIN WORLD
These charming penguins reside in a particularly beautiful section of the zoo.
Witty and entertaining, they are a delight for visitors of all ages.
MEERKAT PARADISE
These small mammals are utterly charming.
Native to the African deserts, they stand about one meter tall and tirelessly dig into the ground, creating burrows where they huddle together for the night.
It is quite amusing to watch them sit upright: not only do they keep their spines perfectly straight, but they also use their long tails for support. The Cologne Zoo is home to hundreds of them.
These little creatures remind us of one of Disney's films, The Lion King — specifically the funny Timon, the inseparable friend of Simba the lion!
THE OWL MONASTERY
Opened in 1997, this magnificent structure serves as a home for the hundreds of owls at the Cologne Zoo.
It is a replica of the ruins of a monastery. The setting is beautiful, and you simply won't tire of watching so many owls.
Some fly about frantically, while others rest on the branches of the various trees scattered throughout the grounds.
PRIMATE MINI-FOREST
A beautiful place, lush with nature, for these incredible animals.
THE ZOO AQUARIUM
In this wonderful aquarium, visitors can admire the underwater world of the Rhine River, Pacific seahorses, piranhas, magnificent colorful fish, crabs, corals, anemones, starfish, and much more.
The facility features over 70 separate tanks.
