The Store of the Famous 4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser Perfume
Now, you are about to immerse yourself in the world of this traditional and renowned Cologne perfumery: 4711.
"Eau de Cologne" is one of the oldest perfume brands in existence, boasting an international reputation. It is considered a cultural treasure of Cologne.
For over 200 years, it has maintained its original formula and its promise of a revitalizing effect, delighting both men and women who attest to its therapeutic qualities in combating heat and daily stress.
Produced using natural ingredients, its formula features notes of orange, lavender, lime, and tangerine.
Eau de Cologne was created in 1792 by the perfumer Wilhelm Mülhens in Cologne. The number 4711 came about when, during the French occupation of the city, a French commander ordered a renumbering of all the houses. Consequently, Mülhens' home was assigned the number 4711.
Following legal disputes with the Farina perfume company, Mülhens decided to adopt this number as his registered trademark.
This magnificent building features a clock at its pinnacle, and every hour, a carillon chimes a different melody.
As soon as you step inside the store, you are enveloped by the scent of "Eau de Cologne"—a fragrance that permeates the air, wafting from a fountain where an open tap allows this wonderful, aromatic liquid to flow freely.
Another highlight of the store is a tapestry—a famous Gobelin measuring 4.5 by 3.5 meters—created for the store's grand opening in 1964; it depicts the scene of the houses being numbered by the French army.
Within the store's small gallery lies an incredible museum featuring photographs, medals, certificates, and vintage perfume bottles. Historical accounts of this renowned brand are displayed throughout the showcases of the small museum and at the store's entrance.
Beyond the famous perfume, the store offers a wide range of 4711-branded products—including soaps, wet wipes scented with the fragrance, creams, aftershave lotions, and many others! It’s truly a temptation!
If you don't have time to visit the famous store, another branch—located right across from the Cathedral—also sells the perfumes.
