The History of the Puppet Theatre
In 1940, German soldier Walter Oehmichen was stationed at a school in Calais, France, where he discovered a small puppet theatre. He began entertaining his fellow soldiers, and the dream of having his own puppet theatre was born and grew.
Returning to Augsburg, in 1943 he created a small theatre, along with his wife Rose and daughters Ulla and Hannelore; this small theatre was burned down during the bombing of Augsburg on the night of February 25, 1944, shortly after the end of a performance.
After the war, a new theater was built in the area of the former Heilig-Geist-Spital in Augsburg, and on February 26, 1948, the grand opening took place, with the play "Puss in Boots" being staged.
In the following decades, the theater grew continuously, and to this day it presents beautiful plays and stages operas, entertaining generations of children and adults.
