It was built around the year 1310 to be the city hall. Its interior is a masterpiece of medieval architecture.
Over the centuries, the building was constantly adapted to the corresponding era. Between 1861-64, it was redecorated again in Gothic style.
During the Second World War it was badly damaged. Reconstruction work only began in 1953, and the 55m high tower was only rebuilt in 1975.
Today its wonderful main hall serves as a ballroom and the tower houses the Toy Museum, where miniature trains, dolls, teddy bears and many other toys are exhibited.
THIRD REICH TOUR
On the day before Kristallnacht — November 9, 1938 — Hitler was at the Old City Hall for a meeting with party leaders.
There, it was announced that a Nazi, Ernst vom Rath, had been assassinated in Paris by a Jew; this served as the spark that ignited the so-called Night of Broken Glass — the destruction of synagogues, shops, and homes, and attacks against Jews in general.
