The Anne Frank Center in Berlin is the official German partner of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Located in one of Berlin's most artistic and historic alleyways (Haus Schwarzenberg), the center is dedicated to keeping Anne Frank's memory alive and promoting tolerance.
The Permanent Exhibition: "Anne Frank. Here and Now"
Unlike the museum in Amsterdam (which is located where she hid), the Berlin center focuses on education and historical connection.
- The Content: the exhibition tells the life story of Anne Frank and her family, from her birth in Frankfurt to her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
- Interactivity: the exhibition uses multimedia resources, combining the original diary with videos of witnesses from the time and reflections from young people today on racism and antisemitism.
- Connection with Berlin: the center explores how the Nazi regime affected daily life in the city and how Anne's memory is preserved in present-day Germany.
The Location: Haus Schwarzenberg
The entrance to the museum is an experience in itself.
- The Courtyard: the center is hidden in a courtyard filled with graffiti and urban art, one of the last strongholds of the "alternative" Berlin of the 90s.
- History of the building: the Haus Schwarzenberg complex is a place of resistance; the same building housed the workshop of Otto Weidt, who saved many blind and deaf Jews during the Holocaust.
