St. Kilian's Cathedral
A Resilient Romanesque Gem
Category

Historic

It is the fourth Romanesque church in Germany. It was built between 1045 and 1188 and dedicated to an Irish monk, Kilian, who came to Würzburg at the end of the 7th century.

There is a beautiful set of bishops' tombs located in the Schönborn Chapel, attached to the church. Baroque-style stucco work adorns the entire choir. Very beautiful.

In 1945 the cathedral was completely burned down, leaving only part of the roof standing. Restoration lasted until 1967. Its beautiful interior was reconstructed as it was originally.

Don't miss the Domschatz, the cathedral's treasures, with its wonderful collection of jewels and other valuable pieces from the cathedral.
