Charlottenburg Palace was built between 1695 and 1699 and was designed by the architect Arnold J. Nering. The palace was initially created to be a small garden and summer palace for the wife of Elector Frederick III, Sophie Charlotte.
After the Elector's coronation in 1701 as the first King of Prussia, the palace was enlarged by the architect Eosander von Goethe in a style similar to that of the Palace of Versailles.
When Sophie Charlotte died in 1705, the castle and the village around it were named after her.
The interior of the castle is wonderful. A highlight is the Porzellankabinett, a gallery whose walls are lined with Japanese and Chinese porcelain.
Don't miss a stroll through the Schlosspark, the beautiful park that surrounds the castle.
