The Topographie des Terrors (Topography of Terror) is one of Berlin's most visited memorials and documentation centers. It is located exactly where, between 1933 and 1945, the headquarters of the main Nazi repressive institutions were located: the Gestapo (secret police), the SS, and the Reich Main Security Office.
What to see on site:
- Permanent exhibition: located in a modern building, it details Hitler's terror institutions and the crimes they committed throughout Europe.
- Exhibition trench: a covered outdoor area (along the foundations of the former Gestapo prison cells) that shows the rise of Nazism in Berlin through photographic panels.
- Section of the Berlin Wall: the site preserves an original 200-meter segment of the Wall, which marked the border between the districts of Mitte (East) and Kreuzberg (West).
