The Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne Philharmonic) building was constructed in 1986 as part of a complex situated alongside the Museum Ludwig and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum.
The complex was built by architects Busmann and Haberer after they won an architectural competition in the early 1980s.
The building was inaugurated on September 14, 1986, with a performance of Robert Schumann's Rheinische Sinfonie.
Since that day, the Kölner Philharmonie has primarily presented classical music, though it also features jazz, folk, and popular music. Approximately 400 performances take place each year, drawing an audience of over 600,000 people.
Whenever performances are in progress, the courtyard outside the building is closed to the public; this is because the stage is located directly beneath the courtyard, and absolute silence is required.
