This museum is located on the banks of the Spree River, opposite Berlin Cathedral.

In 2011, the DDR Museum was the most visited museum in Berlin.

Its exhibition shows daily life in East Germany (known as GDR) in a direct way. For example, a secret listening device ("bug") gives visitors the feeling of being "under surveillance".

The museum opened on July 15, 2006, as a private museum. Private funding is unusual in Germany, because German museums are normally funded by the state. Consequently, the museum encountered some opposition from state museums, who considered a private museum "suspicious" and were concerned that this museum could be used as an argument to question public funding for museums in general.

Opening

It is usually open from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Tickets

It costs €13.50 for adults; €8.00 for children and students.

Address

Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 1

U2/U5/U8/S3/S5/S7 Alexanderplatz Station
