The town hall was built between 1615-1620 by the architect Elias Holl, and is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Mannerist architecture.

During the Second World War it was completely destroyed, but was rebuilt afterwards.

In 1985, in honor of the city's anniversary (2000 years), the interior of the building was completely renovated.

Highlights include the marvelous Goldene Saal, a hall entirely in gold, and the Fürstenzimmer, the Princes' Room.
