A beautiful city in the Franconia region, in the far north of Bavaria.
It is a very old city; as early as 1000 BC there was a Celtic fortification in the place where the Marienberg Fortress is located today.
It was Christianized in 686 by the Irish missionary St. Kilian, who gives his name to the city's cathedral.
During World War II it was heavily bombed. The bombing on March 16, 1945, lasted 17 minutes and destroyed 90% of the city. It seemed as if the city had been wiped off the face of the Earth. More than 5,000 people died.
Its reconstruction was slow and painful, and the clearing of all the rubble was done only by women and children, as the men were imprisoned by the Allies or dead.
Rebuilt over the years, today this beautiful city exudes harmony. Its people are cheerful, welcoming tourists with a smile on their faces. You feel at home! It has wonderful restaurants and cafes.
Würzburg is the first city on Germany's Romantic Road.
