Dukes, electors, and kings: From 1508 to 1918, the rulers of Bavaria controlled the fortunes of their subjects from their residences.
Initially, the Residenz was a small castle with a moat outside the old city fortifications. Today it is the largest urban palace in Germany, where the splendor of past centuries can be discovered in an inimitable way.
In this incredible complex of buildings you will find four different architectural styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Classicism.
During the Second World War it was also quite damaged, and its restoration continues to this day.
The Residenz is also the venue for various concerts, which usually take place in the Hofkapelle.
In addition to the main palace building, the Residenzmuseum with its various royal rooms and apartments, be sure to also visit the following attractions within the Residenz complex:
- Reiche Capelle
- Grottenhof
- Nibelungensäle
- Antiquarium
- Cuvilliés-Theater
