The Neue Synagoge (New Synagogue) is one of Berlin's most stunning architectural landmarks and a fundamental symbol of Jewish history in Germany.
Located on Oranienburger Straße, its golden dome dominates the landscape of the Mitte district.
History and significance:
- Inauguration (1866): It was built to be the main synagogue for the Jewish community of Berlin, with a capacity of 3,200 people, being at the time the largest in Germany.
- Architectural style: Designed by Eduard Knoblauch in the Neo-Moorish style, inspired by the Alhambra in Granada. Its colored stones and golden dome reflect the oriental influence in 19th-century Berlin.
- Kristallnacht (1938): During the Nazi pogroms, the synagogue was set on fire, but the fire was quickly extinguished by a local policeman (Wilhelm Krützfeld), who protected the building claiming it was a historical monument.
- Destruction and Reconstruction: The building was severely damaged by Allied bombing in 1943. After decades in ruins during the GDR era, it was partially rebuilt between 1988 and 1995 as the Centrum Judaicum.
Today, the site functions not only as a synagogue but also as a center for memory and culture:
- Permanent Exhibition: Entitled "Open the Doors," the exhibition narrates the history of the synagogue and Jewish life in Berlin through architectural fragments and documents.
- The Dome (Dom): Between April and October 2026, it is possible to climb to the dome for a panoramic view of central Berlin.
- Prayer Space: Although the original large nave was not rebuilt (the empty space is now a memorial), there is a small active synagogue in the complex for religious services.
Opening
It is generally open from Sunday to Thursday from 10:00-18:00; on Friday it closes earlier (usually at 15:00 or 17:00, depending on Shabbat); on Saturdays it is closed to tourist visits (reserved for religious observance).
Tickets
It costs €7.00 and the climb to the dome is €3.00.
Due to the nature of the place, there is strict security control at the entrance (X-ray). Avoid bringing large backpacks.
