Sightseeing

Alexanderplatz received the affectionate nickname "Alex" from Berliners.

In the Middle Ages it was a cattle market, and until the mid-19th century, it was the site of military exercises and parades. There, in 1805, the Tsar of Russia, Alexander I, paraded when he visited Berlin. The square was named after the Tsar after his visit.

Berlin's urban history is located around Alexanderplatz, and its transformation into a modern transit and commercial area emerged during the second half of the 19th century, with the construction of the train lines (S-Bahn) in 1882, and the subway (U-Bahn) in 1913.

Devastated during World War II, the square gradually developed into a pedestrian area. During the 1960s it became a very popular urban area.

The main points of interest around the square are:

- TV Tower (Fernsehturm): the tallest building in Germany, visible from all over the city, built by East Germany and offering a 360° panoramic view.

- World Clock (Weltzeituhr): a large and iconic clock that shows the time in dozens of global cities. It is a popular meeting point.

- Peoples' Friendship Fountain (Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft): a large, circular fountain built during the East Germany era, which is now a place for relaxation.

- Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus): the seat of the Berlin city-state government is a short walk from the square.

- Marienkirche and Berliner Dom: the historic St. Mary's Church and the imposing Berlin Cathedral are just a few minutes' walk away.

"Alex" is one of Berlin's main shopping centers.

- Shops and Malls: the area has several department stores, the large Alexa shopping center, and numerous dining options.

- Transportation Hub: Alexanderplatz train station is one of the city's largest and busiest public transport hubs, connecting U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, and buses.

The square is constantly transforming, with several development projects always underway.
