In the 1920s, Potsdamer Platz was one of the most important business areas in Berlin, with its department stores, government offices, and hotels such as the luxurious Grand Hotel Esplanade. Café Josty used to be a famous spot frequented by Berlin's high society.
As one of the most central locations, Potsdamer Platz developed into a major traffic intersection, with over 20,000 cars passing through daily. The first traffic light system in Europe was installed here in 1924.
During World War II, major sections of Potsdamer Platz were destroyed. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built, dividing the square in two and trapping it between East and West Germany.
This square is the most striking example of the urban renewal that transformed Berlin in the 1990s after Reunification, and today it is home to incredible buildings: the Daimler, the Sony Center [see attraction 37], as well as an apartment complex and hotel, the Beisheim Center.
The Arkaden Shopping Center opened in 1998 and is one of the city's favorite shopping destinations.
The square is one of the most incredible places in Berlin.
