The history of this ancient Benedictine monastery begins in the 11th century.
Around the year 1030, Count Mangold I brought a valuable cross as a gift from the Byzantine emperor to Donauwörth, where a monastery was founded in his honor.
In 1125, the church and monastery were built on the site of the monastery.
The monastery is impressive and houses many treasures and stories.
Be sure to visit the tomb of Duchess Maria of Brabant, who allowed her husband, Duke Ludwig II von Wittelsbach, Duke of Bavaria, to be innocently beheaded in 1256. The tombstone with the Bavarian coat of arms appeared at the end of the 13th century. The tomb is located beneath the organ.
The crypt, built in the 15th century, is also worth a visit. It is located in the west wing of the monastery, in the church.
In the church, on the right altar, is a representation of the Pietà, built in the year 1500.
The paintings on the church ceiling are beautiful.
