The Karolinenwehr is one of Landsberg am Lech's most iconic landmarks.

Located in the city's historic center, this Lech River damming system not only beautifies the urban landscape but also plays a crucial role in water regulation and the preservation of local historical heritage.

The construction of the Karolinenwehr dates back to 1364, when the citizens of Landsberg established a damming system to control the waters of the Lech. This project aimed to regulate the river's flow, allowing the operation of mills and sawmills, essential to the city's medieval economy. In addition, the dam helped protect the city against frequent floods, common due to the Lech's rapid course.

Over the centuries, the Karolinenwehr has undergone several modifications and improvements. In the 19th century, it was completely renovated to meet the needs of the expanding city. More recently, between 1993 and 1996, a new structure was built to reinforce flood protection and modernize the damming system.

The Karolinenwehr consists of a series of steps that create an artificial waterfall in the river, forming an impressive panoramic view. This feature gives the place a unique aesthetic, making it a popular meeting point for both locals and tourists. Along the banks of the Lech, there are walking areas and public spaces that allow visitors to appreciate the view and the surrounding environment.

Pay attention to the Vater-Lech-Skulptur (Father Lech Sculpture), it is at the beginning of the bridge. This imposing sculpture by Ferdinand Hauk, created in 1952, is an allegory of the Lech River. Its attributes: a mill wheel, a fish and a vessel of running water, reflect the benefits of the river for Landsberg.
