The view from the right bank of the Rhine toward Cologne's Old Town is breathtaking, and the KölnTriangle—a magnificent, modern building—serves as the perfect observation deck for tourists.
Standing 103.2 meters tall, the structure offers visitors magnificent views of the city after they either climb 565 steps or take an elevator that whisks them to the top in just 27 seconds.
The observation deck features large windows that allow tourists to take photos with ease.
Because the building was so tall, UNESCO clashed with the city authorities and threatened to revoke Cologne Cathedral's UNESCO World Heritage status. However, a compromise was reached, and the building was scaled down; it now features one fewer floor than originally planned.
The name "KölnTriangle" was chosen due to its location. Nearby lies Ottoplatz, a square honoring Nikolaus Otto, who developed the internal combustion "Otto engine" in 1876. This same technology also paved the way for the Wankel engine, which is based on a triangular rotor with curved faces.
To pay tribute to the inventor, the building's floor plan is shaped like this very triangle.
The visit is a fantastic experience and well worth it.
