It is the largest square in Cologne, located near the Heumarkt.

During the Roman era, this square served as a harbor quay; over time, however, it was filled in and became an integral part of the city's layout.

This square was first mentioned in the year 992 AD and served as the main square of medieval Cologne.

The square is very lively, featuring numerous colorful, historic buildings that house a variety of restaurants and shops.

The oldest building on the square is the Gaffelhaus (1213), which has housed a brewery since 1987.

During the French occupation of Cologne—between 1794 and 1815—the square was renamed and became known as "Le Grand Marché" (the "Great Market").

The magnificent Old Town Hall of Cologne dominates this impressive square.
