This interesting fountain tells the story of one of Cologne's legends.

Legend has it that the Heinzelmännchen were gnomes who performed at night the work that the people of Cologne did not do during the day.

According to the legend, they continued to do the humans' work at night until a tailor's wife, curious to see the gnomes at work, scattered peas down the workshop stairs to make the gnomes slip and fall. The gnomes were enraged; they vanished and never returned. From that moment on, the citizens of Cologne had to do all the work themselves.

This legend was first written down by Professor Ernst Weyden (1805–1869) in 1826.

The fountain, created between 1899 and 1900, depicts the moment when the gnomes are slipping down the stairs.

The traditional brewery "Früh am Dom" is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions and is located right across the street.
