The massive equestrian statue of the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm III, dominates this square in the center of Cologne's Old Town.
During the Roman era—when they ruled this region—this square was a vast marshland; over the years, however, it was drained and transformed into a major commercial hub for the city. Everything was traded in this square: hay (from which the square derives its name), leather, gold, meat, and vegetables. Furthermore, given that its clientele consisted largely of heavy drinkers who flocked to the site, it also became known as the "Drinkers' Square."
Many breweries and drinking establishments were set up in the square. Today, visitors can still enjoy a fine selection of these establishments.
In the 17th century, the Heumarkt was considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe—a status that changed significantly over time and due to the ravages of war.
During the Christmas season, the square becomes a truly magical place, hosting one of the many Christmas Markets scattered throughout Cologne. A massive ice-skating rink provides entertainment for both locals and visitors alike.
