The Asamkirche church (officially called St. Johann Nepomuk Kirche) was built between 1733-46 in the Rococo style by the Asam brothers.
In 1729, one of the brothers, Egid Quirin Asam, a sculptor and stucco artist, bought two properties to build his residence. He also bought another plot of land next door to build a church to honor his patron saint, St. John Nepomucene.
Egid's brother, Cosmas, soon began building a presbytery on land he had bought next to Egid's house. To connect them, they built a corridor linking the two buildings. The brothers' intention was initially to build a private church, as it would be next to their residences, but the population started a large protest, forcing the brothers to open the church doors to the public.
The spectacular facade displays the works of St. John Nepomucene. The ceiling is decorated with magnificent golden ornaments.
The church is small but impresses with the amount of stucco and decorated plasterwork throughout its interior.
