Here are the beautiful gardens of the city's old castle, the Burggarten.
This garden is located on the site of the Hohenstaufen family castle, which was built in 1142 during the reign of Konrad. When his two sons died very young, the castle lost its importance and his lineage ended.
However, the city formed a community that grew and spread along the hill until it became one of the ten largest cities in the Holy Roman Empire. By the year 1400, the city already had more than 6,000 inhabitants.
In 1356, an earthquake destroyed the old castle. The remains of the castle ruins were used to rebuild the city walls. From the south side of the Castle Gardens, there is a magnificent view over the Tauber River valley and the southern part of the city.
