The Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) is one of Berlin's oldest and most historically significant churches. Located in the heart of the city, between Alexanderplatz and the TV Tower (Fernsehturm), it is one of the few remaining medieval structures in the capital's historic center.
History and Architecture:
- Origin: first mentioned in documents from 1292, the church was originally built as a Gothic basilica of red brick (Backsteingotik), a style typical of northern Germany.
- Tower and Dome: the characteristic tower we see today has been altered over the centuries. The Baroque top, designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans (the same architect as the Brandenburg Gate), was added in 1790.
- Survival: Unlike many neighboring buildings, the Marienkirche survived the bombings of World War II with relatively moderate damage, being restored by the East German (GDR) administration in the 1950s.
The artistic treasure and most famous item inside the church is the mural "Dance of Death" (Totentanz).
- The Mural: Painted around 1484, after a plague epidemic, the 22-meter-long fresco depicts death inviting people of all social classes (from the Pope to the peasant) to dance, symbolizing that death makes no distinctions.
- Visibility: The mural was hidden under layers of lime for centuries and was only rediscovered in the 19th century. Today it remains one of the most important medieval relics in Central Europe.
Current Church Functions:
- Active Church: It is the main church of the bishop of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.
- Organ Concerts: The church is famous for its acoustics and its historic organ by Joachim Wagner (1723). Free and paid concerts are held regularly, especially on Friday and Sunday afternoons.
- Midday Music: There are often prayer times with music at 12:00 for tourists and locals.
Opening
It is generally open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM; during services or concert rehearsals, access for tourist visits may be restricted.
