The Kittsteintor, also known as the “Roter Turm” (Red Tower) or “Faultor”, with its preserved medieval structure on the banks of the Tauber River, is an ancient gate and defensive tower of the medieval fortifications of Wertheim, built between 1500 and 1620. It marked access to the city from the Tauber River valley, forming part of the wall that protected the city.

The Kittsteintor offers one of the most incredible views of Wertheim, with the Evangelische Stiftskirche and the castle ruins in the background.

On the north face of the gate, flood level markers have been engraved since 1595, making it an exceptional historical record of floods throughout the centuries.

The most dramatic flood recorded reached 8.51 meters above the level of the Main River in 1784.
