The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin's most important monuments, a landmark and symbol with over 200 years of history.

It was built at the request of Frederick William II of Prussia between 1788 and 1791, and restored between 2000 and 2002.

It has been the stage for several popular demonstrations and political speeches, including those of US Presidents John F. Kennedy in 1963, after the construction of the Berlin Wall – when he uttered the famous phrase in German "Ich bin ein Berliner!" (I am a Berliner!), meaning that all citizens of West Berlin were as free as he was – and Ronald Reagan, in 1987, demanding that Mikhail Gorbachev tear down the wall ("Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!").
