The Sony Center is one of the most iconic architectural complexes in modern Berlin. Located in Potsdamer Platz, it symbolizes the city's renewal after reunification, occupying an area that was once a "no man's land" divided by the Berlin Wall.
Architecture and the futuristic roof:
- Design: designed by renowned architect Helmut Jahn and inaugurated in 2000.
- The Dome: the most famous element is its glass and steel roof that covers the central forum. It was inspired by Mount Fuji in Japan and is illuminated with vibrant colors at night, creating a visual spectacle.
- The Forum: is a 4,000 m² covered public square, designed to be an "urban living room" where people gather in cafes and restaurants.
- Inside the modern complex, you can still see the facade of the former Esplanade Hotel. To preserve the historical heritage, part of the hotel's structure was moved entirely on rails during construction and is now integrated into the glass of the Sony Center.
What to do on site:
- Gastronomy: there are several restaurants with terraces, ideal for observing the architecture of the dome while enjoying a coffee or a German beer.
- Cinema Museum (Deutsche Kinemathek): located within the complex, it's a must-see museum for film lovers, exploring everything from German Expressionism to the history of Marlene Dietrich.
- Shopping and leisure: although there are shops, the Sony Center is more focused on technology offices, luxury residences, and leisure. For intensive shopping, The Playce shopping mall is right next door, in the same Potsdamer Platz.
