The most impressive building on Marienplatz is the Neues Rathaus, the new town hall. It took almost 40 years to build, between 1867 and 1905.
The magnificent building has an 85-meter-high tower. Its facade displays images of Bavarian history and legends.
More than 600 municipal employees work in the building's 400 rooms, which can be seen not only from the outside. Many historical rooms are open to the public, and the mayor's office can also be visited, but only on open days.
The main highlights are the panoramic view from the observation tower, the carillon, and the exterior facade.
Another highlight is the library: at almost ten meters high, it is one of the most beautiful in the city. With its golden spiral staircases and large bookshelves, it reflects Munich's Art Nouveau style. The library occupies a total of 120 square meters and is open to the public.
The interior of the town hall is also decorated with granite and marble, as are the magnificent meeting rooms, messenger and committee rooms, and Room 200, also known as the Hauberrisser Room, which is one of the few remaining original office rooms, complete with its original furniture.
When there is something to celebrate in sports in recent years, usually after FC Bayern Munich wins a title, the teams stop on the town hall balcony, and Marienplatz becomes a party venue.
GLOCKENSPIEL
Dolls perform a dance to the sound of the carillon in the tower of the beautiful building, with classical and popular Bavarian music, the so-called Glockenspiel.
This famous carillon has 43 bells, the smallest weighs 10kg and is 18cm in diameter, and the largest weighs 1300kg with a diameter of 125cm.
The music varies depending on the time of year, so in December, for example, you'll hear some Christmas songs.
