Sightseeing

It's right in the center of Munich, the heart of the city.

Created in 1158, along with the city of Munich itself, the square was the central market, where fish, salt, and corn were sold.

Surrounded by shops and restaurants, it's located in the middle of the Fußgängerzone, the pedestrian area, exactly between the Isartor and the Karlstor.

The Mariensäule (St. Mary's Column), the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), and the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) are part of this grand square.

It's the setting for the Christkindlmarkt, one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets.
