It is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Munich.

In 1659, Prince Ferdinand's wife, Henriette of Savoy, made a promise to build the "most beautiful and richest" church if she gave birth to an heir. With the birth in 1662 of the long-awaited heir, Max Emmanuel, she fulfilled her promise.

The church was completed in 1688 and its Rococo-style facade was designed by François de Cuvilliés. Its interior is decorated with Corinthian columns and stucco elements.

The tomb of Maximilian II, King of Bavaria, is located there.

Its twin towers are a highlight of the Munich landscape.
