With its four striking towers, St. Martin's Church has been one of the major attractions of Cologne's Old Town since the Middle Ages.

During the Roman era, this area was an island in the Rhine River, where a complex for storing provisions was built. The church was subsequently constructed atop this complex, which can be visited via an entrance located inside the church itself.

The church had to be partially reconstructed following World War II, yet it still retains its original architectural character from the period between 1150 and 1250.
