The theater, which today bears the name of its architect, François Cuvilliés, was built next to the Residenz and saw numerous magnificent productions, including the premiere of Mozart's "Idomeneo."
On March 18, 1944, however, the theater building was completely destroyed. Only the carved and painted wooden seats of the auditorium survived, as they had been moved to a warehouse in 1943.
In 1958, after extensive restoration work, these seats were installed in the so-called Apothekenstock (Apothecary Floor) of the Munich Residenz, and the old theater was rebuilt in this new location.
The new theater building is accessible from the Brunnenhof of the Residenz.
The auditorium of the theater, rebuilt in white, red, and gold in the mid-18th century, with its exuberant figurative and ornamental decoration in the "rocaille style," is considered a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo and one of the most beautiful theaters in Europe.
