Donauwörth was the headquarters of the Order of Teutonic Knights (1197), the oldest in Germany.

In 1214, King Frederick II gave the city's castle to the Knights of the Order, and it was at this time that the chapel was built.

In 1332, Commander Heinrich moved from the city of Zipplingen to Donauwörth and enlarged the castle and chapel.

The current building was built between 1774 and 1778 by Commander Freiherr von Riedheim.

On the first floor of the house is the Städische Kunstgalerie, with various paintings depicting landscapes and the history of the region, and visitors can see the beautiful Enderlesaal.

The Baroque painter Johan Baptist Enderle, born in Donauwörther, who decorated several churches and halls with his paintings, created his most famous ceiling fresco in 1780: "Das Göttermahl" or "Die Hochzeit der Meersnymphe Thetis mit Peleus".
