This old crane on the banks of the river is a symbol of the city.
It was built by Balthasar Neumann's son, Franz Ignaz Michael, between 1772-1773 to simplify the handling of goods from the river to the interior and vice versa.
The crane was operated by human power, and in contrast to the warehouse next door, which was destroyed in March 1945, the crane suffered no damage.
While you're there, have lunch at Brauereigasthof Alter Kranen, a Biergarten that combines traditional Franconian hospitality with a setting on the banks of the Main River. The dishes are freshly prepared and combine regional specialties with creative touches.
The Biergarten, one of the most beautiful in Würzburg, offers stunning views of the Main River, Marienberg Fortress, and the Alte Mainbrücke. Würzburger Hofbräu, a craft beer with an unforgettable flavor, is served there. Open daily from 12:00-23:00.
