The city has about 29,000 inhabitants and was founded in 1264 as a fortification for the Dukes of Wittelsbach, on the border of three areas of Augsburg: Freie Reichsstadt Augsburg itself, the lake, and the monastery of St. Ulrich und St. Afra.

Even from afar, it is possible to see the city walls, towers, and bastions.
